Charles Eames Lounge Chair 670 - Rare Original 1959 Herman Miller in Superb Condition. Listed for sale is a remarkably well-preserved first edition 1959 Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair. With gorgeous 5 ply Brazilian rosewood panels, rubber shock mounts, three arm screws, silver round disc clips, and down-filled cushions, this example is in astoundingly original condition. Famously described as a special refuge from the strains of modern living, the iconic Eames Lounge Chair is one of the most significant designs of the 20th century.
Unparalleled craftsmanship and rigorous attention to detail made it a fixture in homes across the world. UPDATE: The Eames Lounge chair has been cleaned and superficial scratches removed using using extra fine (0000) steel wool, and wood elements have been re-oiled using genuine gunstock oil, all as specifically prescribed by Herman Miller in its online maintenance instructions. The Brazilian rosewood shells are rich, with deep aged color, lovely, and complex grain patterns.
The solid cast-aluminum posts and pentangle base have been polished and buffed to their original gleam (stock matte black baked finish is largely intact). The black leather cushions have been cleaned, balmed, and reconditioned as well. The result is a superbly refurbished example of a first generation vintage Eames in extraordinary condition.Amazing for a 62-year old chair! New photos to be posted soon. Attached is a 1959 photo of the lounge chair in the newly completed house, designed by my father, that I now live in. The chair comes with a letter of provenance from my father, signed and dated in 2021. The cushions show some wear and imperfections as is typical for chairs of this vintage. The curved rosewood plywood shells have five layers and do not show any chips or damage. Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia Nigra) veneer manufacturing was discontinued in 1990, due to harvesting restrictions species protection. Has original circular silver cushion clips. The die-cast aluminum posts, base and parts are in wonderful condition and shine appropriately.
Original matte black baked finish on metal parts is intact. Metal armrest struts have three black screws (thus pre-1971).
The original'Patent Pending' paper label is still affixed to the bottom of chair (see photo). HM foil label fell off and was misplaced. Rubber shock mounts are all in great shape (replaced in 1987 by a Herman Miller dealer in NYC).
There is one scratch repair on the left leather armrest cushion. The seat black leather cushion was replaced at that time due to extensive wear, but the plastic backing is original.
One grommet on the seat bottom was separated from the plastic backing and was professionally repaired.
