This early tramp art pedestal box has the whistles and bells you're looking for, and also brass balls! (Sorry) It is one of the most elaborate versions of the form that I have seen, and almost certainly American since, for all the proliferation of this folk craft in Germany and Europe, the pedestal type is virtually unknown from there. The body of this box is set diagonally to its base, so that it physically occupies more space.
It is quite large and I think completely constructed from cigar box wood. The pedestal neck is over 30 layers with a huge Adam's apple bulge midway. The body has a drop-in lid festooned with eight brass balls and an eleven-layer crest including the carved knob which sports another brass ball. The circular base is supported by four-layer splayed feet surmounted by four more brass balls. Altogether, it is a very. And inventive "take" on tramp art. I'm not sure my pictures do it justice; its wide-angle lens distorts everything. There is a girlie (chaste, Victorian) picture pasted under the lid and another on the floor; the underside carries several very early cigar brand imprints. This fabulous piece is an estate find. It stands almost 13" tall and about 9" square. This will have to be packed extremely well, with the top.
Separately, in quite a large box. The brass balls are on stems stuck into drilled holes and they have loosened some with age - if any fall out in transit, just stick them back in! Thanks for looking - [Boston Primitive].
